Oké, zoals velen weten is Pia Douwes mijn favoriete musicalactrice en mijn icoon. Dus toen ik vorig jaar april zag dat ze weer Elisabeth ging spelen, ben ik (digitaal) gerend om tickets te bestellen. Elisabeth was vroeger de break-out rol van Pia Douwes, dus dit was een full-circle moment om haar in deze rol terug te kunnen zien. Deze keer speelde ze alleen de oudere versie van Elisabeth, dus in de eerste akte was ze alleen in de laatste scène te zien en in de gehele tweede akte. Danique Dusée was de jonge versie van Elisabeth en dit was haar eerste rol na haar afstuderen.

En dan nu mijn mening…

Nee wacht!

Twee dagen voor de voorstelling kreeg ik vanuit het theater bericht dat dit oprecht de Limburgse première was: inclusief prosecco, ‘bekende’ Limburgers én een proostmoment met de cast. Dit betekende dat ik ergens heel diep vanbinnen een sprankje hoop kreeg om een foto te maken met Pia Douwes.

Het verhaal van de musical gaat dus over het leven van keizerin Elisabeth van Oostenrijk; ook wel bekend als Sisi.

Ik wist dat ik de musical goed ging vinden (aangezien ik musicalfanaat ben), maar oh my god. Ik werd helemaal in het verhaal gezogen en vergat alles om me heen.

Ann van den Broeck speelt hertogin Sophie, de schoonmoeder van Elisabeth. Je haat deze vrouw direct vanuit de grond van je hart omdat Ann haar zo goed speelt. Ze is gewoon Sophie: op de manier waarop ze loopt, spreekt en beweegt. Hierdoor was ik direct fan, want dan weet je dat iemand een fantastische actrice is.

En laten we het ook even over Danique Dusée hebben. Ik kreeg direct een minderwaardigheidscomplex aangezien we even oud zijn en zij daar gewoon even de sterren van de hemel speelde. Zowel de kwetsbaarheid als de vastberadenheid van Elisabeth waren voelbaar in haar spel. Natuurlijk zong ze ook het iconische nummer ‘Mijn leven is van mij’ en het was nog zoveel emotioneler om dit lied met de context van de musical te horen. Danique is zeker iemand om in de gaten te houden bij haar verdere loopbaan.

Aan het einde van de eerste akte is Franz-Josef (de man van Sisi) door een gordijn heen aan het spreken met Elisabeth. En dan gaat het gordijn omhoog en staat Elisabeth met haar rug naar het publiek. Ze draait zich om en AHHHH het is Pia Douwes! Het publiek begint direct te applaudisseren en te joelen, nog voordat ze ook maar iets zegt of zingt. Uiteraard deed ik hier enthousiast aan mee. Want O MIJN GOD HET WAS PIA DOUWES.

Natuurlijk was haar zang en spel pure perfectie en bewees ze wederom waarom ze de koningin van de (Nederlandse) musical is. Zang 10/10, spel 10/10, emotie 10/10, beweging 10/10.

De Dood is een belangrijk personage in de musical en werd gespeeld door niemand anders dan Limburgs eigen Milan van Waardenburg. Wat een stem, wat een presence… De Dood is vrijwel de hele musical bezig met Elisabeth naar zijn ‘kant’ te trekken en blijkt uiteindelijk onweerstaanbaar te zijn.

Na de voorstelling kwam dus het proostmoment met de cast. Er was ook media aanwezig en het was compleet uitverkocht, dus ik probeerde mezelf al te vertellen dat het niet ging lukken om een foto te krijgen met Pia Douwes om zo teleurstelling te voorkomen.

Maar ik zou Quinty niet zijn als ik niet stronteigenwijs was, dus ben ik vooraan gaan staan om zo mijn kansen te vergroten. Tegelijkertijd vind ik het ook heel erg ongemakkelijk om een bekend persoon om een foto te vragen; maar wie niet waagt, die niet wint. Ik kreeg helemaal trillende handen, een verhoogde hartslag en het zweet druppelde me langs mijn rug bij alleen al het idee dat ik met Pia Douwes op de foto kon gaan.

Ik wist echt niet wat ik tegen haar wilde zeggen op het moment dat ik haar ging vragen voor een foto. En toen was het moment daar en was ik compleet starstruck waardoor ik op niks beter kwam dan: “U bent echt mijn Beyoncé”. Dit was geen leugen, mogelijk een origineel compliment, maar ook niet mijn beste werk.

De soundtrack staat bij mij al sinds vorige week woensdag op repeat.

Direct na afloop wilde ik eigenlijk nog een keer gaan, maar helaas zijn musicaltickets duur en ben ik een arme student. Daarom zat ik op vrijdag op de eerste rij te wachten totdat het doek omhoog ging en de musical begon. Nu kon ik nog beter letten op mijn favoriete scènes en liedjes.

Oh wat houd ik toch van musicals!

Alright. As many of my friends may know, Pia Douwes is my favourite musical actress and my icon. So when I saw last year that she would be performing as Elisabeth again, I ran (digitally) to get tickets. Elisabeth was Pia Douwes’ break out role, so it was full-circle moment to see her in this role. This time around she only played the older version of Elisabeth, so in Act 1 she only played in the last scene. But she did play in the entire Act 2. Danique Dusée played the younger version of Elisabeth and this was her first role after graduating.

And now my opinion…

No wait! I am moving too fast.

Two days before the show I got a message from the theatre saying that this really was the première in Limburg, including prosecco, ‘famous’ people from Limburg and a moment to cheer with the cast. This meant that somewhere deep inside I felt a little spark of hope that I would be able to take a picture with Pia Douwes.

The story of the musical is about the life of empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi.

I knew I would like the musical (seeing that I am a musical fanatic), but oh my god! I was transported into the story and I completely forgot my surroundings.

Ann van den Broeck plays Duchess Sophie, Elisabeth’s mother-in-law. You will immediately hate this woman with all your might because Ann plays this character perfectly. She just is Sophie in the way she walks, talks and moves. This made me an instant fan, because this shows that someone is an incredible actress.

And let us not forget about Danique Dusée. I instantly got an inferiority complex since we are the same age and she was out of this world. Both the vulnerability and determination of Elisabeth were tangible in her acting. Of course she also sang the iconic song ‘Mijn leven is van mij’ (‘I belong to me’) and it was even more emotional hearing this song in the context of the musical. Danique is definitely someone to keep an eye on during the rest of her career.

At the end of Act 1 Franz-Josef (Sisi’s husband) is speaking with Elisabeth through a curtain. The curtain is raised and Elisabeth is facing the audience with her back. She turns around and OH MY GOD it is Pia Douwes! The audience immediately starts cheering and clapping and screaming, even before she says or sings anything. Naturally I joined them because IT WAS PIA DOUWES.

Her singing and acting were the definition of perfection and she once again proved why she is the queen of (Dutch) musicals. Singing 10/10, acting 10/10, emotion 10/10, movement 10/10.

Death is an important character in the musicals and was played by none other than Limburgs own Milan van Waardenburg. What a voice, what a presence… Death is trying to pull Elisabeth to his side for nearly the entire musical and eventually is irresistible.

After the musical ended, we got to cheer with the cast. There were also multiple media outlets and it was completely sold out, so I tried to prepare myself for the disappointment of not getting to take a picture with Pia Douwes.

But I would not be Quinty if I was not very headstrong, so I stood in front to increase my chances. At the same time I find it very awkward to ask a famous person to take a picture, but: nothing ventured, nothing gained. My hands were shaking, my heart was racing and I felt the sweat dripping past my back just thinking about taking a picture with Pia Douwes.

I did not even know what I wanted to say to her during the moment I wanted to ask her for a picture. And then the moment was there, I was completely startstruck and could not think of anything better than: “You really are my Beyoncé”. It was not a lie, possibly an original compliment, but also not my best work.

Since this past Wednesday the soundtrack has been on repeat. Immediately after the show ended I wanted to see it another time, but unfortunately musical tickets are very expensive and I am a poor student. That is why I sat on the first row on Friday waiting for the curtain to rise and the musical to start. Now I could pay even more attention to my favourite scenes and songs.

O how I love musicals!
